Many changes are established between the major social networks with better or worse results. In the case of Facebook, they have introduced features of other social networks such as Twitter hashtags or own live video Periscope (which also became Twitter). Some of these functions, such as sharing of experiences through live videos, are even unknown to the general public. In fact, it is quite possible not know that Facebook also features trending topics. Moreover, in some cases, you may not even see them in your timeline.
Facebook and trending topics
The company spends a lot of time and money on Facebook, where they create features that produce ‘trending topics’ which made it a source to get news and be aware of today.
Facebook recounted the new changes in its algorithm to bring its users the hottest topics:
- First, the trending topics so far had a brief summary of the story itself. Now, you can find a subject and the number of people who are talking about it.
- You can find more information about one of these issues and their source if you place the cursor over each of them.
- Although this is an automated service, a team ensures that the issues are of quality.
- Trending topics are also based on custom factors that have to do with what you like and what you interact.
What is the problem with the trending topics on Facebook?
The comparisons are hateful. A product that works like a charm and is essential in the approach to Twitter is completely fitted on Facebook. The criticism has rained especially on the possible editorializing of trending topics. That is, the same department responsible for this aspect chose what the most important issues were. Finally, another labyrinth that has gotten the social network is removing those people who are responsible for this area and replace their work by an algorithm that automates these tasks.
The mess, then, was served. The US Senate itself investigated the matter and had sown many doubts around the service. From Mashable, they have criticized the words of Mark Zuckerberg, mainly to ensure that “Facebook is not a media” because it does not produce content but helps users to share them. In any case, it is responsible for distributing them, and these topics trending help the 1.700 million users consume more about news than others.
